David Wiffen Passed Away-David Wiffen Canadian Singer, Songwriter And Talented Artist Dies At 84

David Wiffen, a revered Canadian singer-songwriter and artist, has passed away this morning in an Ottawa hospice, peacefully surrounded by his loving wife, Joanne. His death marks the loss of one of Canada’s most talented and influential musical figures, whose work left an indelible mark on the country’s folk and popular music scenes.

Wiffen’s musical journey began in the vibrant Yorkville folk scene of the early 1960s, where he shared stages with legends like Gordon Lightfoot, Ian & Sylvia, and others. His early songwriting talent was evident, with Ian & Sylvia later covering his classic “More Often Than Not,” helping to cement his reputation. In the late 1960s, he joined the band 3’s a Crowd alongside Bruce Cockburn and others, before releasing his debut solo album in 1971. However, it was his 1973 album, **Coast to Coast Fever**, produced by Cockburn, that truly showcased his distinctive voice and songwriting prowess.

Wiffen’s songs have been embraced by a broad spectrum of artists worldwide, from Anne Murray, Tom Rush, and Harry Belafonte to The Byrds, Cowboy Junkies, and Blackie & the Rodeo Kings. His timeless compositions like “Skybound Station,” “Driving Wheel,” “South of Somewhere,” and “You’ll Never Make a Dollar That Way” continue to resonate, echoing through coffeehouses and folk clubs across Canada and beyond.

A heartfelt tribute concert was held at Hugh’s Room in 2015, celebrating his enduring legacy. Bruce Cockburn once reflected on Wiffen’s importance, stating, “David left an indelible mark on all of us who had the good fortune to share music with him … nothing would have been the same without him.”

Personal memories of Wiffen are treasured, including moments in his sunny Ottawa kitchen in 1972, where he patiently taught guitar and song. His influence as a performer, mentor, and songwriter remains profound. David Wiffen’s passing is a significant loss for Canadian music, but his songs and spirit will continue to inspire for generations to come.
