ST. LOUIS COUNTY, MO — The community is reeling after a horrific wrong-way crash late Friday night claimed the life of 23-year-old Katie Shaw and left two others fighting for their lives. The St. Louis County Police Department is investigating the “shattering and violent” collision, which occurred around 10:44 p.m. on April 3, 2026, on Lewis & Clark Boulevard near Highway 67.

Preliminary reports indicate a black Kia Forte was traveling southbound in the northbound lanes when it slammed head-on into a silver Mercury Grand Marquis. The impact was catastrophic. Katie Shaw, the driver of the Mercury, sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

The collision injured all other occupants. Two passengers in Shaw’s vehicle—a 23-year-old man and a 27-year-old woman—were transported to a local hospital in critical condition. A 22-year-old female passenger sustained non-life-threatening injuries. The adult female driver of the Kia Forte was also hospitalized with non-life-threatening injuries.

“This is a heartbreaking tragedy for the St. Louis community,” a police spokesperson stated. “To lose a 23-year-old woman in such a ‘violently sudden’ manner is a ‘searing trauma.’ Our focus is on providing the Shaw family with ‘full and transparent answers.’”

The investigation remains active and high-priority. Authorities are working to determine where and why the Kia entered the roadway incorrectly. Critical factors under review include potential driver impairment, with standard toxicology tests pending, and possible vehicle mechanical failure.

Katie Shaw is remembered by loved ones as a “vibrant young woman” in the “absolute dawn of her adulthood.” Online tributes describe a “light that was taken far too soon,” leaving a “profound hole” in her community.

In the wake of the tragedy, police issued an urgent safety reminder to all drivers, especially at night. They urge increased vigilance, recommending drivers stay alert to posted signs, consider using the right lane on multi-lane roads for more reaction time, and immediately call 911 to report any wrong-way vehicle.

The crash site has become a place of mourning as friends, family, and a shaken community seek to honor Shaw’s memory and grapple with an unimaginable loss.
