Dolores Merritt Detroit, MI Obituary,Family and Friend Mourns Attorney, Dolores Merritt Dies At 93
The Detroit community mourns the passing of Dolores Preston Merritt, a beloved mother, educator, and attorney who went to be with the Lord in the early morning of Palm Sunday, March 29. She was 93 years old.
Mrs. Merritt lived a remarkably full and productive life defined by service and intellectual pursuit. For over three decades, she shaped young minds as a dedicated teacher in the Detroit Public Schools system. Her profound belief in education was exemplified by her own academic journey; she earned a bachelor’s, multiple master’s degrees, and a doctorate in education.

In a testament to her lifelong passion for learning, Dolores embarked on a second career in her late 50s, earning a Juris Doctor from Wayne State University to become an attorney. She practiced law with vigor and purpose, officially retiring at the remarkable age of 90.
Beyond her professional accomplishments, Dolores was a devoted mother who raised four wonderful children. She cherished her family, including her grandchildren, and a wide circle of friends. An avid traveler, she explored nearly every continent she desired. Her life was a beautiful tapestry woven with faith, knowledge, and love.
Dolores Merritt leaves to mourn her children, grandchildren, extended family, and countless friends and colleagues inspired by her tenacity and grace.
A memorial service to celebrate her extraordinary life will be held on Saturday, April 25th, at 11:00 a.m. at Greater New Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church, located at Oakman and Owens. Further details will be announced. She will be deeply missed, but her legacy of empowerment and education endures.
